Why Bringing 2–3 Outfits to Your Maternity Session Changes Everything

One of the most common things I hear from expecting mums is:

"What should I wear to my maternity session?"

While choosing outfits can feel overwhelming, one of the easiest ways to create a gallery full of variety is to bring more than one option.

I always recommend packing 2–3 outfits that each tell a different story. Not because we need endless wardrobe changes, but because different outfits create different moods, helping your gallery feel rich, personal and beautifully diverse.

What surprises most clients is that the outfit they're least excited about often ends up becoming their favourite.

The jeans they threw in at the last minute. The oversized shirt they weren't sure about. The semi-nude images they nearly talked themselves out of.

Some of my favourite galleries have come from clients who were willing to try something a little different.

Story One: Romantic, Editorial & Timeless

Story Two: Casual, Confident & Completely You

Story Three: Mixing Family Moments With Maternity Portraits

Story Four: When The Wildcard Outfit Becomes The Favourite

A Few Styling Tips for Creating Variety

If you're planning your maternity session, remember that variety isn't just about bringing more outfits. It's about bringing pieces that create a different feel within your gallery.

Consider mixing skirts and pants. A flowing skirt or dress creates movement and softness, while denim jeans can feel more relaxed, modern and effortlessly cool.

Don't be afraid to introduce colour either. While white is always beautiful and timeless, a key colour can add depth and personality to your images. Some of my favourite galleries include a single standout piece that reflects the client's style and helps break up the gallery visually.

I also encourage clients to think about how much of their bump they'd like to show. Some outfits may fully showcase your belly, while others might gently drape over it. Having both options creates a beautiful balance and allows your gallery to feel more complete.

Most importantly, choose pieces that feel like you. The best images happen when you're comfortable and confident in what you're wearing.

And finally, for those who feel drawn to it, some clients choose a nude or semi-nude look as their final outfit at blue hour. There is something incredibly special about this time of day. The light becomes soft and dreamy, the beach quietens down, and the images often feel raw, feminine and deeply connected to the experience of growing new life.

It's never something I expect or pressure clients into, but for those who choose it, these photographs often become some of the most treasured images from their session.
