Family Photoshoot Guide for a Natural Look.

Writer: Ashleigh CostaAshleigh Costa

Dressing for your photoshoot can feel daunting and, honestly, a little stressful. I want you to feel like yourself but also a little bit special. It’s a fine balance between overdoing it and looking totally natural, so let’s find that balance together.

Location Matters

The first thing to consider is where your shoot is taking place. Your outfit should complement the environment while still allowing room for creativity.

Beach Photoshoots

Most of my sessions take place at the beach, and I even have a Pinterest board dedicated to beach style for inspiration. While I love a classic blue-and-white look, I think it’s best done in an effortless, modern way to avoid looking too cliché. Linen textures, stripes, and bold colours that contrast with the ocean work beautifully. A little skin showing—whether through an off-shoulder dress or rolled-up linen pants—adds a relaxed, natural feel.

For beach sessions, barefoot is always a great option, but if you prefer shoes, simple sandals or espadrilles work well. Avoid heavy shoes or sneakers that don’t fit the coastal vibe.

Indoor or Home Sessions

For at-home shoots, I recommend dressing in a way that feels natural to you. Consider what activities will be part of your session. If the kids will be scooting and biking, a long maxi dress might not be the best choice. Keep it authentic and comfortable.

Layering can be a great way to add variety to your look—a cozy cardigan, a lightweight jacket, or a scarf can provide options without requiring a full outfit change.

Rural, Farm, or Bushland Settings

For shoots in the bush, grassy areas, or on a farm, dress for the setting. I love seeing Blundstones, Hunter boots, vintage dresses, and cosy textures. Think about the feel you want from your images—these photos tell a story and capture a moment in time.

If the weather is cooler, layering with knitted jumpers, flannel shirts, or wool coats can add warmth and texture to your look.

Styling the Family

The most important person in these images is often mum—not only because she’s usually the one organising everything, but also because she’s the most likely to be self-critical. So, let’s start with you, Mum!

Mum’s Outfit

Ask yourself: Do you already own something you love? If yes, perfect! But if not, I encourage you to treat yourself. A photoshoot is an investment in your memories, and you’ll cherish these images for decades.

You don’t have to spend a fortune—I love places like Ghanda, DISSH, Cotton On, The Archive Place for sales, and of course, op shops.

Once you’ve chosen your outfit, consider the colour and pattern. If it’s bold, do you want your mini to match? I love a coordinated look, whether through matching patterns, complementary colours, or subtle pairings like pastels together or bold contrast (e.g., red and green or deep ocean blue).

Kids’ Outfits

Dressing the kids is usually easier because there are so many adorable options. The most important thing? Dress them for the location. If we’re shooting at the beach, expect them to get wet! Bring bathers or a change of clothes—but honestly, if it’s a beach shoot, I’d love them just in their bathers.

Props can add fun and personality to their look. Think:

  • Cool hats or sunglasses

  • A favorite stuffed toy

  • A knitted jumper

  • Baggy jeans

  • Their scooter or skateboard

If it’s a cooler day, layering a jumper or jacket can keep them comfortable while still looking stylish.

Dad’s Outfit

Dads, you’re up last—but only because we know you’re the least likely to overthink your outfit. That said, I have ONE BIG REQUEST: NO WHITE BUTTON-UP LINEN SHIRTS SLEEVES ROLLED WITH BEIGE PANTS/SHORTS!

Phew, I said it.

We love you dad but really you can just wear a nice t-shirt or something with a little more personality to the shoot A nice t-shirt, a relaxed linen shirt paired with something other than beige, or a simple, stylish outfit with personality is perfect. Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, there are no strict rules. This is your shoot, your family, and your style. Wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident. Use texture, color, and personality in your outfits. Bring the worn-out jeans with the busted knee, the tired boots, the Birkenstocks, the Blundstones, and Grandma’s knitted jumper.

Your photos should capture your authentic self—so embrace it, have fun, and let’s create something beautiful together.
